The Freshman Mentor program at LCHS known as Link Crew has started off its inaugural year strong! 80 volunteer juniors and seniors welcomed over 80% of the freshman class at their orientation in August, and then offered a make up day for those who couldn’t participate at the start of school. The freshmen were guided through a program, first as a whole group, then via small group activities. They also met their Link Leader mentors and toured the high school campus.
On the first day of school, the 9th graders were visibly more comfortable than they have been in past years. Link Crew leaders wore bright orange shirts and stationed themselves in the hallways throughout the day. Teachers, who normally stand in their doorways and answer questions, observed freshmen bee-lining it to anyone in an orange shirt for help. The Link Crew leaders have since followed up with their freshmen crew members to invite them to the BBQ tailgate party for the first home football game which was held on September 1st. Many braved the heat to partake in free food, games, and to mingle with new and old friends. The Link Crew Advisors, Dan Yoder, Sarah Beattie, Gavin Williams, Kim Lauxen and Rachel Zooi have led these events and are excited to work with the student leaders on ways they can support our LCHS freshmen through their dynamic first year in high school.
